The Rustic

The final location on the trail is the Rustic in Victoria Buildings at 41 Stamford New Road. Victoria Buildings was part of the new property development which followed when the new road was built to the new railway station. Stamford New Road was built in the 1880s on what were the George Street gardens, orchards and market gardens. Hale Moss came right up to the edge of these gardens before the railway intervened. The building across the road from the Rustic was the Post Office which had transferred from Market Street, and an indication of how the arrival of the railway moved the commercial focus of the town away from its previous area around Old Market Place. On the same side of Stamford New Road, next to number 74, is the entrance to the Causeway with its original cobbles, and which led from George Street to the gardens on which Stamford New Road was built. Cross Street, which is just before where the trail began outside the Railway station, crosses over Stamford New Road into Moss Lane, and was originally just the extension of Moss Lane from the end of George Street.
