The Station Hotel
The first location on the Altrincham heritage trail is the Station Hotel, on Stamford New Road, but it is not the first station hotel in Altrincham and the railway station across the road is not the first railway station.
The Station Hotel
The first location on the Altrincham heritage trail is the Station Hotel, on Stamford New Road, but it is not the first station hotel in Altrincham and the railway station across the road is not the first railway station. The railways arrived in Altrincham in 1849 and the first Altrincham railway station was further down the road just before the Barrington Hotel, and where Stamford Street, formerly known as Turnpike Road, went over the now disappeared railway level crossing on its route to Stockport. The Barrington Hotel is on the site of the first Altrincham Station Hotel
Today’s Altrincham railway station opened in 1881 and the Station Hotel is a late nineteenth century building. The railway station replaced the former Altrincham and Bowdon stations which closed when the new station opened and the new station was first known as the Altrincham and Bowdon station and Stamford New Road was built at the same time to access the new station The double fronted Station Hotel and the single fronted shop to the right are Grade II listed buildings together with the Clock Tower and Stamford House, which was originally known as Station Buildings, Altrincham’s first purpose built office block. These buildings are the northern end of the Altrincham Conservation Area and they are the most recent heritage. From now on the trail takes us further and further back in time as we head down Stamford New Road to the next location on Stamford Street.
